| Where are the differences between a program and an agent? |
To be precise we would say that an agent is a "computer program" that makes use of all the facilities that Computing and Networking offer today. Some scholar emphasizes the agent's autonomy but programs autonomy was always a target for smart programmers, as well as "cooperation". Programming was always progressing at a fast pace from its beginning and we would dare to say that it is one of the most promising outcomes of the human intellect.
Agents are then sophisticated programs specially designed to emulate human tasks (as individuals or as groups), endowed with learning capacity based on man-machine interactions, as much as possible autonomy, and as much as possible auto maintaining and updating ability, that could have many functions specially suited/adapted to "external circumstances". For these reasons we may hear of "multi agent scenarios", "multi layer agents", and "multi functions agents".
Agents used to have complex architectures and hundreds of programs, interfaces, gateways, communication areas, depending of the complexity of tasks to be performed.
